Have a lovely beautiful birthday sweet meggie.  May your year be filled with cuddles and kisses from all your grandchildren.  May your garden be filled with beautiful blossoms, butterflies and bird songs.  May your hockey team be in winning form.  May you enjoy good health and wonderful vacations.  May there be lots of wonderful quilts ahead and plenty of Merlot.  And, may Philip give you his towel.

Thank you all for the kind wishes.  The Soap Yard birthday wishes are always a highlight of my birthday.  This morning, I was serenaded by grandchildren singing 'Happy Birthday' from Quebec and the BC coast, and taken out for a wonderful steak dinner tonight.

I'd asked for a light box to be used in applique, and also received gift cards for pedicures and the garden store, as well as some very wonderful small sized garden tools with extendable handles, perfect for clearing and working in smaller beds.

It warmed up considerably today and I even enjoyed having the rain.  It felt like spring might actually arrive soon.

I'd never thought of my birthday as pi day, Amanda.  It was always the day before the Ides of March...as in 'beware the Ides of March' from Julius Caesar.

...now about that towel....smilebiggrinbiggrin

It all sounds lovely.

I don't understand how a light box would be useful with applique.

You use it to trace patterns. There's an applique method that I'm learning where you trace the pattern on the back of the background fabric , and the light box is wonderful.

That makes sense.  In photography, a light box is used for examination of negatives and slides.  A magnifying loupe is needed.

Would it be illegal to accomplish this digitally?

My daughter scrap books.  She has a Cricut machine that can cut out all kinds of designs, patterns and lettering in any size that she wants.  It uses cassettes.  Her photo albums are extraordinary.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I've already bought the patterns that I'm tracing onto my fabric, or they might be my own design.  It's just a method to get it onto the back of the fabric.

Opps.......What I meant was, is it like cheating or a sin if you don't do everything by hand on your quilt?  Or is some technical assistance acceptable in quilting circles?  Are there rules, standards or guidelines about these things?

The applique I'm doing is definitely by hand, however, there are no quilt police. There are juried shows that have rules but basically, this is a fluid craft that develops and changes with new methods, technology and materials. If the pioneer women had sewing machines, they used them and were glad of them.

Most people piece by machine, applique can be done by hand or machine and so can the quilting. Some of the machine thread work is museum quality. It depends on what you are making, what you like and what you enjoy.

I like machine piecing and prefer to hand quilt unless it's a baby or very utilitarian quilt which I machine quilt. I hand applique with various methods, and generally enjoy the learning process as much as anything.
