I watched Tuesday's ATWT to catch TP and I had to laugh at all the familiar soap conventions.  One guy said something about his father coming back from the dead and we have a dead guy stalking Henry.  I was shocked when that lady Margot(?) turned out to be a cop!  I thought she was someone's mother in law (and she may be, but she didn't strike me as cop material, LOL).

Also, that guy, Dr. Hughes -- has he been around FOREVER?  He actually looked familiar from my childhood when my mom watched this show for a bit.

I also got a kick out of that girl referencing Wesleyan -- that's where my son goes!  :D

So sorry about the names -- it's hard to keep them all straight.

Some of us have been viewers of ATWT for a long time.  I saw the first day of its broadcast more than 50 years ago and for me, part of the value of the show is that some characters have been portrayed by the same actors for many years.  For me, that gives them more authenticity.

Nancy Hughes (Helen Wagner) still appears from time to time and she was the original mother when the show began.

I believe that Don Hastings (Dr. Bob) was a writer on the show long years ago and ended up as an actor.

Lisa (Eileen Fulton) Dr. Bob's ex-wife has been on since she portrayed a young sife and mother.

Margo is Katie's and Craig's sister and Casey's mother and is married to Tom Hughes (Dr. Bob and Lisa's son) who is the district attorney.

Mattie (Alexandra Chando) is Henry's sister and was once Casey's girlfriend.

When I started writing this, I was hoping to make things clearer for you, but as I read this, I don't think I've helped you at all.

All I can say is, stick with it.  And maybe things will begin to fall into place.  Of course, I love the show and the characters, but it has come from years of watching.  It is a wonderful stable of actors, but, of them all, I must say that Henry (Trent Dawson) is my favorite.

Maybe someone else will do a better job of explaining than I did, but, anyway, welcome aboard!

Good job, Jo!

The one talking about his father coming back from the dead is Paul Ryan (son of Barbara Ryan and the late (but surely not really) James Stenbeck, who was also apparently the father of our dear Henry -- yikes!)

James Stenbeck is ATWT's supervillain who has "died" and then made a comeback on more than one occasion! He's super creepy.

LOL, JJ, you're making my eyes glaze over.  It feels like attending someone else's family or high school reunion.  For now I'm just watching the Henry story and the Tom Pelphrey story.  The rest will have to wait, they're just not grabbing me yet.  As I mentioned, I have very limited time, so focusing on a couple of stories works for me right now, plus eventually other characters will drift in and out of those scenes.  I also like that girl who plays the Arcadia game (?).  She's the one who mentioned Wesleyan!

Trent, if you read this, you're GREAT and I can see why you have such a devoted following!

The girl that plays the Arcadia game is Maddie Coleman -- our dear Henry's little sister.

I'm going to try to contain my shock and horror that you are not keeping up with Det. Jack Snyder. C'mon now!

Amanda, is he the one who's all over the place? Literally? Does he time travel? I gave up on him when he greeted some hard hat worker and I could not for the life of me figure out what was going on so I ff'd to the Henry story.

This has been really interesting to watch a soap from a cold start. It's HARD! I can see when people have the time during the day, but it's virtually impossible if you work full time and have a family -- just too many other demands on my life. It makes me realize why it's a shrinking genre. That is not a comment on ATWT at all, just soaps in general.

Maybe over a vacation I can try to watch more.

Yes, he's running all over the country at the moment. (He's having a meltdown b/c he shot his own brother by mistake -- hope you caught some of those scenes!)

ATWT is doing a "Never Surrender" tour where they are having events in all those cities where Jack is going. I am guessing that this crisis of Jack's is a catalyst to Jack and Carly maybe getting back together, but that is not founded in anything much besides my own hopes!

I can see how the hard-hat guy would have confused you. That guy -- Mike Kasnoff -- is one of Jack's best friends, who is not actually on the show anymore. So that was kind of a nice nod to history -- like when Nola or Hawk or some such would pop up on GL. Jack went to find Mike b/c he's Katie's ex-husband and Jack thought Mike may be able to help Katie get through the loss of her husband and the newborn baby (as Mike always wanted a child of his own). Too bad Mike was already married with a baby when Jack found him.

Which, to you regular ATWT-viewers -- did anybody else feel a little ripped off that Mike Kasnoff -- such a beloved character, has gotten married and had a child and we knew nothing about it? Kinda sad. I am pretending that he named his daughter Caroline after Carly. *wink*

YES!  that was fast, he only left oakdale a year ago.  but on the other hand, katie made it clear she was over him, so what's the poor guy to do?
