Who let the Canadian air in?! It's so cold I'm not even walking Kayla today and that means it's WICKED cold!!! I ordered a new quilted down coat from LL Bean that goes down to my knees, but it's not here yet. I figure once I get that I can brave the negative numbers with the Weather Channel guys!
If it makes you feel better,, it was 47 in Miami last night!
Now, can you just make sure it does not RAIN on Friday, so that they don't have to think about postponing the Winter Classic hockey game? I will be rooting for your B's to pulvarize Sammie's Flyers!
Woo hoo, Joel!!! Go B's!!! My kids had wanted to go to the game, but there's a storm coming up the coast that could make the New Year's game a tad uncomfortable. They're discussing it on the local news right now. Calling it "Frozen Fenway," LOL! It would be so much fun!!!
ps. I'm taking some comfort that it's in the 40's in Miami. Thanks, Joel!

It's about 12* here currently but according to the weather reports, with the wind chill, it feels like -2*. I wore my long Eddie Bauer, good for -20* down coat just to walk out to my mailbox. Brrrrrrr! It's the wind that makes it awful. If it is just plain cold, you can dress for it and be warm inside your coat. How people can live in the Artic, I'll never know.
Well........It seems the frigid temps were too much for our 30+ year old electrical cable that's buried along our street. We have underground wiring but no other piped in utilities here. Last night at 11:00 PM, I heard a "POP" outside and the house went dark. Usually this is due to a squirrel on the transformer that's down the street and around the block. The lights were out along my entire street. I called the electric co (thank goodness for cell phones) and went to bed but not to sleep. No power in an all electric house means NOTHING works. An electric truck came during the night and drove up and down the street. I thought 'Good', we'll have power in the AM and finally went to sleep.
At 7:30 AM there was no power and 7 or so utility vehicles were lined up and down our street. It seems our old cable burst in the ground some where along our street. They had to find the break and then dig to repair it. Thank goodness the digging would happen on the other side of the street. My iris beds were safe from disruption. My house was cooling down. One of my neighbors, who was not affected by this brought me hot oatmeal and hot chocolate! What a treat!!! ..... I left, for the morning, had a hot dinner of Swedish meatballs + broccoli with friends at a senior center and came back at 1:30 but they still weren't done. Left again and returned after 5:00. It was sweet happiness to drive down my street and see everyone's lights on. My normally toasty office isn't toasty yet. It will take a while for the electric heat to catch up.
Times like these really raise an appreciation of one's blessings. A very good thing was that there was no more wind. There were several men working outside here today who are heros in their own right.

Sure makes you appreciate electricity, huh? Buried cables are great until something like this happens. You've got to wonder how they decide exactly where the break is. I'm glad they didn't need to disrupt your iris beds.
Speaking of the cold... I had ice on my windshield yesterday when I got ready to go to work. Had to sit all bundled up in the car waiting for the heater to warm things up enough and for the ice to thaw off my windows. No ice scrapers down here...
It's supposed to be only in the low 60's for this weekend. Brrr! I know that's a heat wave to you all, but it's pretty miserable for us.
At this point, anything over 30* feels balmy. You know when the temp has hit zero because at that point the bitter air bites your skin.
Sounds like you leave your car outside. There's no need to scrape any ice if its been kept inside a garage. .... Sometimes the window washer fluid helps clear the frosted ice away except if it is cold enough, that will freeze on the cold glass also.
After today, it feels good to be in my house and have both my feet and my hands feel warm.

Glad you got your elec back Ruff, not fun to be that cold. We have been at freezing last couple of nights, supposed to have low of 29 both Sat and Sun. I know, warm for you guys, but we just don't have the clothes for those temps. Besides, our heat is a heat pump attached to the A/C; works great down to about 35, below that the thing just doesn't like to put out hot air!
We are going to the Gator Bowl tomorrow, raining now and to continue through tomorrow morning, but supposed to dry up (still overcast) in time for kickoff. Hope so, otherwise could be pretty miserable!
No...Bite your tongue JoelC... No rain. I want to watch the Winter Classic tomorrow and I am rooting for the Bruins! I work 3rd shift tonight but I will be up to see the game tomorrow :) Then it will be time to watch OSU in the Rose Bowl!
Oh, Ruff, what an awful day to lose your power! It wasn't a frigid as Tuesday, but it was still dang cold out. My new puff coat came last night, just in time for it to warm up to the 30's. But I know I'll need it sooner or later (probably sooner).
Wow, Light, I can't imagine you in a cold car with ice on the windshield!!! I'll get you a scraper for Christmas, LOL!
I'm getting excited for the hockey game! It's supposed to rain a little bit, but I don't think that will dampen the spirits. The hockey players are excited about playing outdoors. When they opened the rink, some old Bruins were there to break it in. Bobby Orr has to be one of the nicest guys around! He was skating with a family whose dad is serving in Afghanistan and he was so sweet with the kids.
Brrr, that's cold. I'm glad everyone is back warm and toasty. Ruff, I'm sorry you were without power during such a cold time, but how fortunate to have a senior's centre as a refuge. Swedish meatballs, yum. Almost makes it worthwhile. light, you may get two scapers. I hope your lovely plants aren't frozen. KarenGA, enjoy the Gator Bowl. Hockey fans, the outdoor classic is always fun, and reminds us of what hockey is supposed to be like, minus the thousands of spectators and the tv cameras, of course.
If it makes you feel better,, it was 47 in Miami last night!

Hey!!!! My Flyers smoked the Rangers 6-0 last night, baby, there will be no pulverization unless the orange and black pulverize the teddy bears!

I'll be watching my mail for the ice scrapers... LOL. It's warmed up to the 70's today but we will be back in the 30's at night with the highs in the low 60's again this weekend. Weird weather and it's got to stress out the plants. I pulled the orchids onto the back porch where they could be sheltered, but with the long holiday hours and not getting home before dark, I didn't get anything covered. If it's hardy enough, it will survive, if not, well... I may have lost a few things but hoping not. We'll see. Hopefully the freeze was short enough not to have hurt. Oh, and KarenGa, I've got a heat pump, too... as you say, it works fine until the temps get just so low and then I have to turn on the accessory heat function.
Ruff, I sprayed the window washer for a while as I waited for the car to warm up. I have a garage but don't keep the car in there yet, as I haven't cleared out a space for it, LOL. I didn't have a garage door opener until recently so it didn't make any difference until then anyways. Half of the garage is storage (we don't have basements or attics down here) and the other half is my workshop- I have a number of woodworking machines which I use for making furniture, etc. I keep telling myself that one of these days I'm going to get things moved out of the way so I can park my car inside- hopefully before the rainy season starts.
You guys stay warm and safe up there in cold country... and enjoy your hockey games. KK, I loved your story. What a nice guy :)
My friend met Bobby Orr at a fund raiser and couldn't say enough nice things about him. Good to know there are great athletes who are also great people.
