Humming bird feeder

This year I have a new humming bird feeder.  It was an on-line order and came from a place that specializes in bird and humming bird feeders.  It's a charming antique style bottle that hangs upside down.  It screws into a covered feeder tray dish with 4 metal flower feeder ports.  They said it was bee and bug proof.  It doesn't drip either.  So I filled it and it's been hanging for 3 days.  Today I went up to the plant hook to add a hanging plant and realized the bottle was just about empty!!!  My other cute little glass feeder was never emptied.  It always had bees at it and the ants would get to it as well.  The mix would go bad and have to be changed.  But the little hummers cleaned out this new bottle lickety split!  Impressive.  This is going to be fun.

The hanging plant is a fuchsia.  Maybe the hummers will like it.  We'll see.  They are very shy right now.  They are not yet used to my presence in the yard and take off at the first sight of me.  Last year, I could be weeding near by and would hear the whir of their wings as they came to the feeder.

That must be quite a feeder or you have the hungriest hummers I've ever heard of.  I've always had the same experience as you with the mixture going bad before it's ever used by birds.  Do you have a photo of the feeder or a link to the source?  My $5 feeder isn't attracting anything at all.

The hummers should love the  fuschia, especially with the reds and pinks.  The little lantern flowers are so delicate and pretty.

It's been up less than a week but so far, so good.
The hummingbird is coming a lot!  She may be feeding a brood.  The plant hanger is in the shade for the most part.  Not sure if this is a factor re the white bacteria....which still has not happened yet.

Managed to get a picture of the humming bird.  The fuchsia makes a rather busy background for such a little bird but it likes the fuchsia.  The bird comes, feeds a little bit, then goes into the pine trees to sit.  After this, it comes back to the feeder.

The irises in the back yard are in full bloom.  The heat brought everything out.  They won't last long in 90* weather but they sure are beautiful right now.

Great shot of the humminbird, and what a beautiful feeder.  Your fuschia looks like it is thriving.

We use feeders with the same bottom as the one you bought. The humers are wild on our 5 feeders every summer. They get to the mountains and are hungry I guess. I have to refill about 2 quarts of sugar water every week or so. They seem to be very sensative to mold and bacteria, the feeders have to be kept really clean. We don't use the prepackaged dyed water either. Just mix 1 cup sugar per quart of water and bring to a boil. I cook up 2 gallons at a time and keep the extra in the fridge. That way I have some ready whenever the feeders are empty.

The ants did find the feeder today.  Rats! .... no ... Ants!
There's vaseline on the poll base now and there's fly paper handy if it's needed.

The fuchsia is brand new, fresh out of the nursery.  Whether or not it continues to look wonderful remains to be seen.  The humming birds like it.  The male came today.  He is gorgeous.  They were a little more tolerant of people today.  There were 3 of us standing with in 10 or 12 feet of the feeder (not moving a muscle) and they stayed to feed.  It really is a joy to have them in the yard.

Nice looking feeder and at a good price, too. :)
Good catch getting the little bird's picture. Those things are so fast it's hard to catch them in a good shot.

Mom and sis have hummingbirds up where they are in Georgia and I understand we have them down here too though I've never seen one the entire time I've lived in Florida. I've had a couple of feeders but the only thing I managed to get were wasps and I definately don't want to attract them to my yard (I have a stinging insect phobia... possibly linked to my allergy to them you reckon? LOL)

Sure is a pretty feeder, though...

Everybody likes this feeder!  Nice.  Thanks.

Haven't seen any wasps at this one so far.  The ants are still coming which means having to use the fly paper.  That stuff is so sticky!  One time I tried using laytex gloves when wraping that around the pole base.  It was a real Lucille Ball moment!  ....  Ahhh, the joys of gardening!  LOL!
