Are you a night owl or an early bird?

Here's a link to a CNN article:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/07/09/night.owl.morning/index.html

My oldest daughter is up at 5:30 AM and rolling fast.  You don't call her house at 9:00 PM because she's dead tired and headed for bed.  Where she got this gene I'll never know.  It certainly wasn't from me because at 9:00 PM I think the day is young.  While my eyes may open early in the AM, given my first choice, the body is happy ensconced in a chair before the puter, usually until about 10:00 AM before indulging in such thoughts as having to get up and move to anywhere for any reason including breakfast.  I have never liked the act/process of getting up and going to work in the AM.  For a while I had a position that required an 8:00 AM arrival time.  During that entire year, I constantly felt tired and as if I was coming down with something.  Fortunately other opportunities came along and I was able to acquire a more agreeable schedule.

How is it for you?  What's your best time of day?

Ruff, you and I are definitely kindred spirits!  I can get up early if I have to but, like you, a later start is preferable.  I always thought that one of the perks of teaching was that it was a job that started at a reasonable hour.
When the kids were little, I remember starting to paint and wallpaper rooms at 9pm, and I'm still rarely in bed before midnight.   sleep.gif I  had a job working for Revenue Canada one year that started at 7:15 with a half hour plus commute and it nearly killed me.  Getting up wasn't so bad but trying to go to bed before 10pm just didn't work with my body clock.

Yes, this post is 8:30am but I'm up and waiting for the person supposed to be here half an hour ago to take down some trees.  Guess he's not a morning person either!  sleepy.gif   sleepy.gif

Early bird here!  If I'm not up when the sun is, I feel as if I'm missing something.

Ruff, I am almost exactly like your oldest daughter. Even on weekends I am up early....Saturday's I'm at the grocery store when it opens at 7AM and Sunday's I'm up bright & early so I can read my Sunday paper & be done by the time the day's sporting events begin. Sleeping in is a foreign concept! LOL

I am so like Joel and your daughter. I don't need an alarm clock to wake me up at the first light of dawn and rarely get up past sunrise in spite of having room darkening shades. I seem to be very light sensitive and can't sleep unless I cover the red lights from my vcr and clock :P Always been like this... and some days I get up early enough that I get stuff done around the house before leaving at 7:15 for work (sometimes it's the laundry, sometimes it's cooking something special for lunch, sometimes it's grouting the tile I put down the morning before, LOL) I have most energy first thing in the morning and by the time I get home from work, I am soooo done. Sometimes I have to fight to keep myself up until 8 or 8:30. Well, guess that's to be expected when you get up at 5, huh?

I am incapable of sleeping in, even when I've been out late the night before, which is kind of annoying!  I wish I could just roll over and go back to sleep.

I'm like Joel and I get irritated by stores that don't open early.  Many department stores don't open until 10:00 -- what's up with THAT?!

Grocery shopping at 7am?  I've been grocery shopping at 11pm.   Midnight Madness sales were made for me!

Ruff, we have the same affliction.

LOL... forget the Midnight Madness for me, it will never happen. I can stay up if I am busy and intent on finishing a project but I pay for it the next day as I can't sleep in, either, no matter how late I stay up. I've managed to sleep in until 7-7:30 on a few occassions (like when I'm sick or when I go to visit my mom who lives in a basement apartment without windows. Without the light from the windows, my body will wake me at 8 hrs sleep based on when I go to bed at her house)

I have to say one of the most pleasant parts of waking up is the quiet that I get by myself before the rest of the world wakes up. I guess it's very much like the quiet some of you get when the rest of the world has gone to bed... but in my quiet, I get to watch the sunrise, hear the insects of the night fall asleep and the birds begin to wake and call to each other. I love looking at the morning dew on the flowers and watching their petals unfold.... and I do it all without a cup of coffee, LOL :)

THis morning I'm up early enough to have already taken care of the animals, put a load of laundry in the dryer (washed it as I slept last night), have another load washing and am heading in to grout some tile I laid Wed evening... and then I'm off to work. Lunch box is packed already... and it's 6:15 ;D hehehe...

What's midnight? biggrin The downside of being an early bird is, no matter how hard I try, I cannot stay awake for shows past 10:00.  We have to start movies by 8:00 because no matter how exciting it is, my eyelids drop shut by 10.

I just want to clarify -- I love to get up early (today I woke at 5:15 and couldn't get back to sleep), but I LOVE to putter in my jammies with a cup of coffee and oj when I don't have to go to work.  I also enjoy the peace and quiet of morning.  Every day feels like a fresh slate!

WAKE UP MEGGIE AND RUFFLES!!!  LOL!!!

I am definitely a Night Owl, but something in this article really struck me. It talked about how they tested people by their leg strength throughout the day. Well, it just so happens that I live on the third floor of my apartment building, and my office at work is also up two flights of stairs. I have often marveled that when I come in to work in the morning, it's about all I can do to haul myself up those stairs, but catch me in the afternoon, and I can run up and down them with no trouble. I guess that's my proof! It just never occurred to me that there might be a corrolation!

Put me on the list with the night owls, lol.  I have always had to be at work early and it has always been a problem for me because I just could never get to sleep that early to get enough rest before the alarm would go off.

It is great now working from home because I set my own hours.  I am with Ruffles in that if I wake up early I like the time to sit and do quiet activities like watching Good Morning America or browsing the computer or reading or something of that nature.  Movement starts around 10 a.m.  And with my work from home job I am dealing with calls and clients all over the US so that works well as I can't start calling people until after that time and I can concentrate on west coast people after 8 pm if needed.

I rarely hit the sack before midnight or 1 am.  When everyone else goes to bed is when I get to do online stuff without interuption.
