The katydids are cranking full steam tonight. It's a warm humid summer night which means the windows are open and I can hear them all over the place. A few of them started up a couple of nights ago. As much as I love this sound, it's bitter sweet for it is summer's grand finale. They will continue their sawing until the frost gets them but there's always at least one persistant die-hard still doing its best to carry on into October. It's much slower but persists with a most determined sawing crank. That remarkable achievement is to be respected and always brings a smile knowing this is one katydid which is not giving up on its promises for next year.
